Strategic Directions 2006-2009

Drawing on the strength of the UnitingCare network in its size, scope and diversity, UnitingCare Australia seeks to influence social and public policy and advocate better quality of life outcomes for all Australians, with a particular focus on those who are the most disadvantaged and vulnerable.

Through the development of innovative responses to need and the strengthening of existing effective programs, UnitingCare Australia promotes the enhancement of community services provision across the UnitingCare network.

All of the work of UnitingCare Australia is grounded in the expertise of our service deliverers, the experience of our service users, and the values and vision of the Uniting Church in Australia.

We will give life to this work by focusing on the following strategic directions:

Speaking out, empowering those disadvantaged and vulnerable

In the three year period we will advocate for policies and practices that build opportunities for all people to live hope-filled lives in an environment that promotes wellbeing by:

  • using our mission, size, scope and diversity
  • working in partnership with other bodies and as participants in a national campaign

Developing sustainable policies and positions

In the three year period, drawing on the knowledge and experience of the UnitingCare network and its communities, we will develop policies and positions in order to:

  • Speak out
  • Contribute to the development of innovative responses, and
  • Affirm existing effective programs

We will focus this work in the following areas:

Ageing and aged care

Children

Disability

Mental health/illness

Impacts of the Welfare to Work 2005 legislation

Building the capacity of UnitingCare Australia

In the three year period we will build the capacity of UnitingCare Australia and its network by focussing on the following enablers:

  • articulation and communication of coherent principles about why and how we do our work
  • the building of relationships and a culture of trust and collegiality across the network and wider church
  • the building of relationships and partnerships with organisations of goodwill
  • improvement of systemic communication across the network and engagement of members in our work
  • review and development of a rational and sustainable approach for financing UnitingCare Australia by developing a strategic financial plan
  • further integration of shared priorities and work with the Uniting Missions Network
