UnitingCare Australia

Financial Health and Wellbeing

Why is Financial Health and Wellbeing an advocacy priority?

Coping with the rising costs of living is a challenge for many in Australia.  UnitingCare Australia believes the primary attention of government in responding to cost of living pressures needs to be on assisting disadvantaged and vulnerable Australians.

Financial hardship is affecting a growing number of people, and people with higher incomes.

The number of people seeking assistance – for emergency relief and financial counselling – is continuing to grow, with both people who were managing before, and people with higher incomes increasingly needing to access services.  Mortgage and rental costs are a principal cause of financial stress for these households.

Financial hardship is becoming more entrenched, with one impact being more children and young people living in poverty.

Key advocacy actions

  • Welfare reform
  • Income support justice (including the adequacy of income support and opposing conditional welfare)
  • The reform of emergency relief and financial counselling programs
