UnitingCare Australia Congratulates Victorian Government on Response to Homelessness

UnitingCare Australia has today congratulated the Victorian Government on its $109 million plan to respond to homelessness released on the weekend.

“Our frontline community services across the country are seeing steady increases in the number of people without secure housing,” UnitingCare Australia Acting National Director, Martin J Cowling said.

“The lack of social and affordable accommodation is at the centre of this crisis. There is literally no place for these people to go.

“As such, we believe the issue requires strong leadership of the kind demonstrated by the Andrews Government.

Mr Cowling said stable and safe housing underpins functional families and communities.

“Homelessness harms the health and wellbeing of people. It particularly impacts the capacity of older people, children, youth, Indigenous people and those from a culturally diverse background, and those with disability or a mental health issue, to contribute to society and the economy and lead a dignified life.

“Australia has the resources to ensure that everyone experiences belonging in a safe and supportive community, with appropriate housing.

“To successfully address the issue it is vital for different levels of government, private and not-for-profit organisations like ourselves, to work together,” Martin Cowling said.

“We congratulate Premier Daniel Andrews and express our appreciation to his government for this strong, proactive and considered response.

“We encourage the Federal Government and other State governments to follow suit on what has become a national crisis,” Mr Cowling said.
